Westport’s Best Parks & Outdoor Spaces and Why They Matter More Than Ever

After more than 40 years living and working in Westport, Connecticut, I’ve learned that our outdoor spaces are more than beautiful backdrops, they’re part of the rhythm of daily life here. Between experiences with family and friends, walking my dogs, and guiding countless clients through Westport’s neighborhoods, I’ve spent decades experiencing these places in a very real and personal way.

And today, when life feels busier and louder than ever, our beaches, parks, and coastal trails matter even more. They’re where we breathe, reset, reconnect, and rediscover the quieter parts of ourselves.

People often ask me, “Michelle, what do Westport locals actually do outside?”

Here’s my answer shaped by many a year spent in this remarkable coastal town.

Compo Beach — The Heart of Westport

If there is one place that defines Westport’s lifestyle, it’s Compo Beach. I’ve watched generations of families gather here, paddle boards lined up at the shore, kids building sandcastles, playing on the swings, friends catching up over lunch from Hook’d on the Sound. That energetic summer buzz is part of what makes living in Westport so special.

But my favorite time?

Off-season mornings. Coffee in hand, a quiet walk along the water, and a few friendly “good mornings” from neighbors. Compo has always felt like the town’s front porch welcoming, familiar, and full of life.

Winslow Park — A Daily Tradition

Winslow Park is woven into my personal routine. Anyone who knows me knows I’m out with my dogs and Winslow is one of their happiest places. The regulars know each other, the dogs know every bend in the path, and there is this wonderful sense of neighborliness that makes Westport feel small in the best possible way.

We always say, “Walk a dog, even if you don’t have one.” Winslow has that effect on you, a perfect reset in the middle of a busy day.

Earthplace — Westport’s Quiet Gem

Earthplace is a truly special part of Westport, CT. It’s educational, calming, and deeply connected to nature. Over the years, I’ve watched so many families discover the trails, the wildlife center, and the peacefulness that seems to wrap around you the moment you step inside.

It’s one of those places that reminds you how much natural beauty surrounds our town.

Burying Hill Beach — A Hidden Coastal Retreat

Not everyone knows about Burying Hill Beach, and I think that’s part of its charm. Tucked away and serene, it’s the beach locals go to when they want quiet; to read, to think, to take photos, or simply enjoy the stillness of the Long Island Sound.

If Compo is Westport’s heartbeat, Burying Hill is its deep breath.

Longshore Club Park — The Westport Resort You Never Have to Leave

Longshore is one of the places that made me fall in love with the Westport coastal lifestyle decades ago. With golf, tennis, pickleball, kayaking, sailing, the pool, and the marina — it feels like a private resort, yet it belongs to the town.

My husband and I have spent countless afternoons walking the property, relaxing by the water, at one point docking our boat at the town marina…and soaking in the atmosphere that makes Longshore so remarkable and unique to our town.

Old Mill Beach — Small, Quiet, and Deeply Local

Old Mill Beach brings me right back to the essence of Westport; intimate, charming, and community-centered. Early mornings feel like a scene from a coastal postcard: neighbors strolling barefoot, chatting softly, and watching the tide move in and out.

Even without Elvira’s Market, the spirit of that beloved corner is still alive.

Why These Spaces Matter When Choosing a Home in Westport

After decades helping clients buy and sell homes throughout Westport and Fairfield County, I always tell them this:
A home is more than its floor plan.

It’s the lifestyle surrounding it.

It’s where you unwind after work the beach you walk at sunrise
the park your kids grow up in
the trails you explore with your dogs
the simple, peaceful moments that make you feel grounded

In a world that moves fast, these outdoor spaces are what keep life in balance.

And Westport offers them naturally woven into everyday living.

If you’re considering a move, exploring neighborhoods, or simply want to understand what life in Westport truly feels like, I’m always happy to share the insider perspective that comes from decades of local experience.

Because at the end of the day, these spaces and the way you live in them are what make Westport feel like home.
